I’m massively late to this story but only because I wanted to give it some thought before chiming in.
Anyway, Variety tips us off on what movies will be advertised during this year’s Super Bowl broadcast on February 1st. While NBC was originally asking $3 million per 30-second spot (which translates to about $100,000 per second) the network has been sitting at about the 90 percent sold mark since October or November and so almost certainly gave them a reduced price to unload the remaining available inventory.
Here’s a look at the movies :
- Transformers – Revenge of the Fallen: This will be the first look at the movie’s footage.
- G.I. Joe: Likewise, this is the first public exposure from Paramount for what they’re hoping will be a big movie but has suffered some bad initial press.
- Star Trek: Hard to figure out what the thinking is here, except that Paramount is hoping the more action-oriented nature of the franchise revamp strikes a chord with the sports audience.
- Angels and Demons: A mass audience loved The DaVinci Code and Sony’s obviously hoping the masses will do likewise for the sequel.
- Monsters Vs. Aliens: This is Dreamworks Animation’s big bet to continue the non-Shrek success it started with Kung Fu Panda. Look for them to be heavily emphasizing its 3D release.
- Land of the Lost: Will Ferrell in an effects-driven comedy. Duhr.
- The Fast and the Furious 4: Again, the best I can come up with is “Duhr.”
- Up: Pixar has been a fairly regular Super Bowl advertiser so it’s not surprising to see them back with their next film
I’m more than a litle surprised that Watchmen isn’t on this list. Same with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Those were two I was placing what I thought would be a sure bet on. But apparently Warner decided it wasn’t worth it. The Watchmen campaign will be in full swing by this time, a month out from release, so I would have expected at least it to get a spot.
Look for MMM to bring you the movie spots the night of the game. I haven’t read of anyone like Hulu or YouTube doing another dedicated Super Bowl channel yet, but I’m sure there will be news about something in the coming weeks.
