Legendary Pictures, the film financing company that’s been behind many of the biggest movies – particularly those from Warner Bros. – of the last three years or so, is looking to get its own video game unit. Specifically, it’s looking to buy Epic Games, a video game publisher best known recently for the Gears of War series.
The deal, if consumated, would give Legendary the capabilities to start video game tie-in production as soon as film receives the green light and retain all that intellectual property.
Most of the major studios, including Warner Bros. in and of itself, have been making significant moves in the video game space in the last year or so. While Legendary would be the first financing unit to do so, it’s not that surprising, especially since the list of films they’ve been behind all have strong video game possibilities. Video games are an important movie tie-in product, even if a good number of them do wind up being disappointing, especially to hard-core gamers.
Meanwhile there’s a reported bidding war going on involving a handful of studiso over a game title that’s yet to be published and is said to be loosely based on Dante’s Inferno.
