Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull advertising notes

As we hurtle toward the May 22nd release date, the advertising for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is definitely ramping up quite a bit.

First off, the picture to the left was snapped by me this morning along Clark St. in downtown Chicago. I’ve seen two or three of these around and about, all within the last week or so. They’re all the same, with Jones in the pose we most remember him in, running for his life from something that’s way over his head.

Marco Andretti will be racing the #25 Indiana Jones-themed car in the Indianapolis 500 on May 25th, just days after the movie opens. The car is actually being co-sponsored by Blockbuster Video as part of a larger promotion the rental chain is doing for the movie that includes making “Indiana Jones at the Indianapolis 500″ merchandise available in stores for purchase.

Indy (the character) will also appear on Kyle Busch’s #18 NASCAR car at the Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington this Sunday, May 10th. Busch drives for the M&M Brand Candies team and, considering M&Ms are doing a lot of promotion - including branded packaging and co-branded commercials - this makes a lot of sense. (Thanks to Tom for letting me know about this.

Liz Rizzo at the Everyday Goddess blog has some pictures of big honking Indy 4 ads going up on the sides of the same building that last year hosted banners for Transformers. Now those ads did not turn out very well, blowing down just a short while after they went up so hopefully these will have a better time of it, with the installers hopefully having learned something about support and such in the intervening year.

Chicagoist caught the visage of Dr. Jones appearing on the online team schedules for both the Cubs and the Sox on May 22nd. The Cubs appear to be off that day so it’s just Indy that’s there on the calendar but he’s sort of watermarked on that date on the Sox page since they do have a game then. I checked and he’s on the schedules for all the MLB teams, and AOL Fanhouse has a pic of the Braves’ schedule, as well as news that yes, this is a major deal between Paramount and the MLB, the second such movie deal for the league after the disastrous base-redesigning promotion for Spider-Man 2 years ago.

Finally, ComingSoon points to two new TV spots for the flick, bringing the number up to four by my count.

It’s probably worth noting that the huge Los Angeles Transformers ads that blew down covered the entire building, which was just beginning construction. The new Indy ads are installed on new panels which are built into each side of the building for the specific purpose of holding (the much smaller) ads. So these ads are a first test of those panels, which look quite up to the task.

Cheers!
