New Deception poster

This new poster for the Hugh Jackman/Ewan McGregory/Michelle Williams psycho-drama Deception is not all that fired different from the earlier version that was released.

The only real point of differentiation is that this one removes McGregor’s mouth from Williams’ neck. But that does change the tone of the poster – and subsequently the movie it’s selling – quite a bit. With McGregor giving Williams a hicky there was a very overt attempt to position the movie as erotic. Or at least as sensual and obviously lust-filled.

By presenting them all simply facing forward, without McGregor pulling a Lestat. it’s sold more as a straight-forward drama about a relationship triangle. Jackman is still separated from the other two, but it does open up the possibility of being interpreted as a competition between the two guys for Williams’ character’s affections. The other one takes Jackman out of that equation and that might not have made the movie as attractive to women since he has the stronger history of playing the romantic lead than McGregor does.
