True to their word, Lionsgate has revealed the first teaser trailer, as well as two posters for their comics adaptation The Spirit at the New York Comic-Con this weekend.
Let’s deal with the posters first.
The first is a very, very cool teaser one-sheet for the movie that does yeoman’s work in setting the gritty – but slick – noir feeling for the movie. The black and white look of it are right out of not only the source comic but Philip Marlow stories, with the cityscapes and just general look and feel on display here.
It carries over the “My City Screams” copy point that has been used in the campaign far, which is good since that’s a strong rallying cry for the movie that can be used just about anywhere. I like it a lot and it’s certainly going to be a hit with not only comics fans but also fans of Sin City, which this new movie is a spiritual brethren of, as well as being directed by Frank Miller, who co-directed Sin City as well.
Also sure to appeal to the fanboys wandering the halls of Comic-Con this weekend is this other poster for The Spirit. This first in what’s sure to be a series of character posters showing off the movie’s cast features Eva Mendes.
Let’s face it, this is all about getting the comics crowd that might not see a lot of female action all riled up in their fanny-pack zones. Mendes is all pouty and windswept in her skin-tight black outfit – which conveniently is unzipped halfway down her bosom – and she’s reaching out as if for their hands and you just want to…
I’m sorry where was I?
Oh right: Instead of showing off someone like Scarlett Johansson or Samuel L. Jackson they went for Mendes, an obvious ploy to get people to put these posters on their basement bedroom walls and talk about it online.
So, you know, success.
Moving on to the trailer, it did indeed become revealed through the trailer that was distributed a few weeks ago and which you can still see a little further down the right hand side here at MMM. But instead of playing within the box, the widget prompts you to click through to MTV.com where you can actually view the trailer.
It’s a pretty good spot, even if it is more or less an extreme trailer. All it really is is a “hero rushing into action” sequence. Don’t get me wrong, it looks very cool and could be the first taste of something just as visually ground-breaking as Sin City was. But there’s little to no substance in the spot. I like it, but don’t click through expecting anything new. I’m not even certain this footage will wind up being in the movie, that’s how isolated this little bit of action seems.
Still, a handful of very exciting entries into The Spirit’s nascent campaign.
