X-Files: I Want to Believe
20th Century Fox and franchise creator Chris Carter have finally gotten around to assigning a title to their X-Files movie sequel: I Want to Believe.
The phrase should be instantly recognizable to any fan of the series since it appeared on the UFO poster adorning the office wall of Special Agent Fox Mulder, played by David Duchovny.
Carter is quoted as saying the subtitle is reflective of the movie’s character’s struggle with both faith and science, but I think that’s more or less hooey. What it actually reflects is the desire by those behind the film to bring in franchise fans who might be disappointed with the fact that the movie does not tie into the series’ alien mythology. Instead it’s more of along the lines of the “monster of the week” episodes that filled out the series.
The delay in the release of the title is said to be the result of studio dithering over whether it was a “marketable” title or now. I have to ask what they were thinking on this. “Fight the Future” sails through without a problem but a phrase that is almost synonymous with the franchise needs to be market tested for months and months?
