The Onion Movie trailer

The Onion Movie trailer

I remember hearing and reading about how The Onion, America’s Finest News Source, was putting together a movie years ago but actually kind of assumed the project had died of inertia a while ago.

Not so. Instead it appears to have been languishing somewhere for about three years and is now being released straight to video. You can get a taste of the movie in the trailer that’s appeared on the New York Times website, of all places.

It’s a pretty funny clip, showing that the movie will be basically a long-form video version of their acerbic headlines, with a TV news broadcast serving as the conceit for all the ridiculous faux news stories.

Interspersed in the news satire is, funnily enough, movie trailer spoofs. Shown in the trailer is the preview for Cock Puncher, a new Steven Seagal movie about the most obvious martial art of all time.

The only problem with the news segments of the trailer are that they suffer by comparison with the increasingly excellent Onion News Network. Those short news segments are just getting funnier and they’ve really found a groove. So seeing some other version of the same idea is a bit jarring.

But it’s still quite funny and I’ll certainly be looking to check it out.
