New Iron Man trailer

New Iron Man trailer

ironmanpic1.JPGParamount and Marvel have released the new trailer for Iron Man. This is presumably the long version - it runs about 2:30 - with the shorter version running during tonight’s episode of “Lost.”

This one is probably the coolest of the lot so far and that’s saying something. You get the same sort of setup, though with different footage, in the beginning showing Tony Stark getting caught in Afghanistan. That transitions to more footage of him testing out the armor, footage that is similar to what was used in the Super Bowl spot earlier this month.

Then things turn in a direction we hadn’t really seen before, that of Iron Man as superhero. We see him battling Obadiah Stane, played by Jeff Bridges, who eventually creates his own armor, dubbed the Iron Monger.

The heavy reliance on hard rock music in the trailer is an indication that they’re appealing to what I’ll, for lack of a better term, dub “NASCAR guys.” You know what I mean.

But the trailer as a whole is wicked cool and I like that each entry in this series expands the story a little bit more. It makes each one fresh, even as they also revisit scenes from previous trailers.

Chris, about your “NASCAR guys” comment… On one hand, I DO think Para is trying to market this to a wider range of individuals and really push this to be a huge mainstream blockbuster beyond the typical comic book fans, I think that comment is going too far…

Like with any huge comic book movie nowdays (or even Indiana Jones), you really don’t need to market to the group of fanboys who are going to see it anyway. That’s what Sony did for Spider-Man 3 and they really minimized their costs in that sense of marketing… And in exchange they really push it to a wider market so that it can capture the attention of those people who are bordering on the edge of whether to go or not and don’t have a clue who Iron Man is/was before this trailer.

I think Para (along with WB) is one of the studios that is really on top of their game when it comes to marketing and this trailer goes to show that they know it. Iron Man is going to be a huge hit and make bank, that is for certain.
