A survey by BrandIntel shows that, based on online opinion, No Country for Old Men deserves to win the Best Picture Oscar later this month.
Other Best Picture nominees There Will Be Blood and Juno were not chosen because of a lack of perceived chances for success. TWBB was just generally believed, it seems, to be the second place winner while Juno was dismissed because of the perception that a movie that wasn’t quite as “heavy” didn’t stand a serious chance.
BrandIntel touts its survey data as providing insight needed by studios for future use in devising Oscar-related marketing campaigns, which is a fair point. If there is a strong sentiment that X movie isn’t weighty enough then there could be adjustments that are needed to overcome those preconceptions.
I’ll be talking more about Oscar-related campaigns in the next couple weeks.
