The Hammer trailer
I’m not so sure about this trailer for The Hammer, starring Adam Carolla as a slacker who finds the one thing he’s really good at is professional boxing.
On the one hand I do think Carolla is very funny. He’s’ one of those people who just thinks differently than everyone and his dry, world-weary delivery sells the things he says well. And that comes through in the trailer.
On the other hand the material here looks sub-par for Carolla’s talents. He’s given easy targets like Nicaraguan immigrants and over-bearing bosses to play off of and riff on and, because he doesn’t appear to be pushed by the material, “dry” becomes “looking like he’s just tired and not trying.”
The trailer has a few laughs but it’s too much of a cobbling together of a handful of funny moments and not something that presents a cohesive picture of the movie. I want to like it but it just gives the impression of such a lazy effort that I kind of can’t.
