Leatherheads poster

leatherheadsposter.jpgVia ComingSoon comes this new poster for Leatherheads, the period football comedy starring George Clooney and John Krasinski.

It’s a great poster at selling the main point of the movie, that the two actors play a couple of football players back before shoulder pads and big helmets and such. It’s slightly funny without being overly wacky and works really well, I think.

But I look at it and am struck by the startling lack of Renee Zellweger. Her name is included but that’s it.

Universal is obviously planning on marketing this either 1) Almost exclusively to guys as a football movie or B) with a two-pronged campaign, one of which will follow this tack and another that will be softer and funnier that’s meant to appeal to women.

I kind of think it’s too small a movie to really take a two-track campaign approach. I just don’t see awareness being high enough for them to successfully pull off two separate pushes, one per gender. It almost makes more sense for them to push this one solely as a football movie and leave the romance out of it as much as possible.

And yes I know that I’m saying that in light of the trailer that showed a lot of the romantic comedy aspects of the movie. But this is a stark departure from that and I wonder if it signals a shift in thinking.
