The trailer for Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns has been released and it…well…looks like a Tyler Perry movie.
Angela Bassett plays a woman who’s facing some hard times when she gets a letter saying the father she never knew has died. So she goes to meet the rest of her extended family, who she also doesn’t know and who don’t know her. Cue alternating heartstrings and wackiness.
The trailer shows a movie that bounces between earnest issues of family and identity, finally finding love and slapstick comedy. Scenes of Bassett crying are quickly followed up with shots of someone being pushed into an open grave because he had it coming. Scenes of struggling to come to terms with a family are followed up by an outrageous character with crazy pants.
Finally, just to hammer home the fact that this is a Tyler Perry movie, his character Madea (Perry in drag as a grandmother-type) makes an appearance.
Perry’s films are obviously finding an audience so this trailer is likely to connect with that group but there’s little to nothing to bring in outsiders. It almost feels to me like Perry is trying to bring together both the audiences for movies like his recent (X) and his TV show “Meet the Paynes” which is very broadly comic.
