New site unveiled for Abrams’ Star Trek

startrekxi_bigteaserposter.jpgParamount has debuted a new Website as part of the just-getting-off-the-ground campaign for Star Trek, the relaunch of the franchise being helmed by director J. J. Abrams.

NCC-1701.com uses the designation of the Enterprise as its address. On the site, which is unbranded, there are four screens that present an experience that makes it feel like you’re watching a bank of security cameras. There’s nothing much that’s going to be spoiled, it’s most the same sort of construction guys with welding torches that made up so much of the teaser trailer.

Some initial speculation is running that Abrams will be creating another all-encompasing marketing phenomenon like he did for Cloverfield, but I’m not going to add to that. I think this is just a cool idea that they thought would get people excited about the movie and you know what? It seems to have worked.

But, while I’m sure Paramount is thrilled with the returns Abrams was able to deliver with Cloverfield, I doubt they’re giving him carte blanche with the Star Trek brand. He may get a little bit of freedom, but this is a property he’s managing and not a creation of his own, meaning we won’t see the Federation equivalent of Jamie & Teddy anytime soon.
