Diary of the Dead trailer

diaryofthedeadpic.jpgThis trailer for Diary of the Dead, the latest zombie installment from legendary director George Romero, is not all that bad – and that’s coming from someone with little love for the horror genre. It shows that the movie is trying something new – more of a handheld camera documentary of the zombie badness – and not just relying on the same old cliches. I’m not saying it adds a ton to the history of cinema or anything like that but it’s not bad.

Unfortunately it’s kind of impossible to watch the trailer, which shows the movie to be a video document from someone who just happened to be filming as the zombies rose and started eating brains, and not think of Cloverfield. Not because of the eating brains part but because of the handheld camera part. While I don’t believe there’s any “Oooo…we should do that too” going on here, the timing is a little unfortunate and probably lessens the impact this trailer would have on the audience. We’ve been watching this style of film for months now with the Cloverfield campaign and so it just doesn’t seem that ground-breaking anymore.
