New Cloverfield preview during New Years Eve on ABC

cloverfieldpic1.jpgABC’s host for their New Years Eve festivities broadcast, Ryan Seacrest, introduces this “new” compilation of footage from Cloverfield that aired the other night.

I put “new” in quotes since there’s not much that’s actually new in it. It’s just a new arrangement of footage we’ve previously seen in other trailers and TV spots. But it, along with the HD ad that Tom said aired during Sunday Night Football, likely introduced the movie to a whole new mainstream audience, and it, like previous TV spots, definitely reflects that.

To the mainstream audience the movie is being sold as a monster movie. To the online, wired audience the movie is being sold as the culmination of a mystery. The latter is far more engaging, but it doesn’t play as easily to the ordinary television viewer.
