A trailer has been released by Paramount Vantage for The Duchess, a period drama starring Keira Knightley as Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire. Ralph Fiennes stars as the Duke, her husband, but as this trailer shows – and as you’d likely suspect from such a movie – there’s another man who enters the picture to provide the third point in a romantic triangle.
The trailer kind of plays as a more straight-faced, less hip version of Marie Antoinette, the Kirsten Dunst movie from 2006 that, thanks to the artistic inclinations of director Sophia Coppola, included a modern rock soundtrack. This one is all classical music and repressed emotions eventually culminating in the orange-tinted sex scene. It hits all the same notes as just about every other trailer in this genre, including that for The Other Boleyn Girl, starring Natalie Portman.
It’s alright, but it seems sort of stagnant, like any two or three actors could have been plugged into this and a different title card placed at the end and it would work just as well. I actually liked the first half, where you just saw the back of Knightley’s head or the silhouette of her walking down the hallway more. That actually created some anticipation for the movie, but then it just turned into a variation on the same trailer we’ve seen time and time again.
