This new trailer from Sony Pictures Classics for the animated film Persepolis differs quite a bit from the first one that was released. Where that version tried to present a holistic view of the main character’s journey from girlhood in Iran to womanhood back in Iran after spending years in Europe, this one focuses more on that character – who is actually the author of the source graphic novel – finding her identity amid the clash of cultures and rules.
There are lots of scenes in this second trailer of Marjane Satrapi – or at least her animated alter ego – putting on or tearing off her burka or otherwise exploring her femininity and finding frustration with the people around her who don’t seem to realize she’s trying to be her own person. There’s also less – meaning none at all – emphasis or mention of the awards the movie has already racked up or the critical acclaim it’s already acheived.
It’s a good trailer, just for different reasons than the first one.
