I’m vaguely disappointed in the fact that Paramount has begun running TV spots for Cloverfield. I’m trying hard to fight that sort of snobbery you find among people who stop liking a band when it finally has a hit song after years of underground status, but I think that’s what’s creeping in.
Actually, I don’t think it’s so much that as the fact that what has been a very interesting, interactive – and mostly online – effort is now going to have to adjust to reach the mass audience. That brings with it a certain amount of dumbing down. Gone are the subtle hints, the videos just begging for over-analyzing. In their place is a mainstream campaign that will sell the movie as a big monster flick.
Anyway, check out the three TV spots currently in circulation.
