Watch the first five minutes of Cloverfield

cloverfieldtrailersmaller.JPGParamount has put the first five minutes of Cloverfield from producer J.J. Abrams online for viewing. But it’s only watchable within a Cloverfield-branded widget you embed that’s also part of a contest. See, while you can choose to just grab the widget’s code, you’re immediately prompted to enter your email address and register for your own personalized widget, registration that enters you in a contest. The 20 people who have their widget grabbed by others the most will get prizes, ranging from a screening of the movie to a Cloverfield prize pack.

Maybe it’s just because I’m not thinking of it the right way, but isn’t there, like, no incentive for people to grab your…oh nevermind. They’re trying to incentivize the spreading of this widget across the web and have created the contest to do just that. You can generate raw widget code, post it to your blog, social network or personalized homepage a la iGoogle. It’s a good idea.

As for the clip itself…it’s pretty cool. It starts off about halfway through the footage we saw in the first teaser trailer and then continues on from there, including scenes we then saw in the second, theatrical trailer.
