Speed Racer trailer

speedracer-trailer.jpgAs many have noted before, the first trailer has been released for the Wachowski Brothers-directed big screen adaptation of Speed Racer. The movie is a mish-mosh of live-action and completely over-the-top computer graphics during the race that add up to what is widely being called the first full on mainstream U.S. movie using Anime-style visuals.

So aside from the visuals how does the trailer work? I don’t know, because that’s almost literally all the trailer is. There’s some notion of a conspiracy by some evil guy to keep Speed from ever winning a race, no matter how hard he tries, but that’s not really important. Nor are all the father/son issues hinted at with the appearance of John Goodman as Speed’s dad.

They’re just there to fill in the spaces between finished footage of the race sequences. Seriously – If more of the races had been finished from the FX team I’m sure there’d be more in the trailer. The live-action story points are just there to pad the running time.

That being said it’s a fun trailer that is sure to cause excitement among the core audiences for the Speed Racer franchise. It’s fast-paced and keeps your attention. It’s just not very meaty. But it doesn’t really need to be.
