Karina found something that just makes me want to kill a puppy.
After deciding that Idiocracy was too smart for the audience or something, 20th Century Fox threw the Mike Judge movie into a couple of theaters for about a day and a half and didn’t do anything to promote it, barely even releasing a trailer. Now, though, they are promoting Brawndo, an energy drink that is part of the movie’s story (in the future it’s consumed instead of water and has lead to the dying off of all plant life) as an actual drink. Or something. I’m honestly not sure if they have their tongue in their cheek or not.
The drink has a website and everything where you can order Brawndo or Brawndo-branded shirts. That seems secondary, though, to the prompts to add Brawndo to Facebook or MySpace, with both options right there staring you in the face. There’s also a commercial.

What I don’t get is the timing of this. The movie came and went from theaters over a year and a half ago and has been on DVD since January of this year. So why are they launching this campaign now? I’m completely mentally driving past the fact that they’re promoting a fake product from a movie they essentially disowned. Not going to deal with that at all. I just wonder what that brainstorming session was like.
Mktg Guy 1: You know what we should do?
Mktg Guy 2: What?
Mktg Guy 1: Make a Brawndo drink.
Mktg Guy 2: A what now?
Mktg Guy 1: Brawndo. You know, from Idiocracy.
Mktg Guy2: Never heard of it.
