Fox Searchlight has released a new poster for Juno, the critically acclaimed film starring Michael Cera and Ellen Page. This new one-sheet carries over the striped background look – a reference to the shirt Page wears – from the first one, which made a swollen belly under that shirt the focus.
I wished I liked this new poster a bit more than I do. I think for a movie that’s being hailed by festival audiences as fresh and original it’s a bit bland. It’s not that it’s unattractive, just that it seems cobbled together and the elements don’t really come together to form something that’s stronger than the sum of its parts. Part of that, I think, is that Page is looking directly at the audience and appears to have been part of a photo shoot. Cera, though, is looking off-camera and it looks like that element was pulled from the film. Those two images together create a sort of disconnect that I keep getting hung up on.
I do like the orange striped theme, though, and am glad the studio is using that as a consistent branding element.
