Awake trailer

Hayden Christensen dives into weird, non-linear story-telling with Awake, playing a man who doesn’t actually go unconscious when he’s under anesthesia for surgery. While not-asleep but unable to move he hears the doctors performing the surgery conspire to kill him and take his fortune and tries to communicate that plot to his fiancee, played by Jessica Alba.

The trailer is really cool and communicates that plot quite well, giving us just enough setup to figure out what everyone is doing in the places they are and what the main focus of the story is going to be. It manages, through a lot of fast-cutting, to build a genuine sense of motion toward the end.

The trailer will likely be attractive to some, but it’s not clear to me what audience is actually going to be moved to see this. The stars are too young to attract the older crowd that might be more drawn to dramas and there’s not enough fancy-schmancy stuff going on to really “WOW” younger audience members. Could wind up falling somewhere in the middle and not attracting either group, but that’s going to depend on what the rest of the campaign winds up looking like.
