Fox Searchlight finally finds way to use Wilson for limited Darjeeling promotion
UPDATE: Defamer has the video of the interview. Go check it out.
First off, go read the title again. (LOL @ myself)
Moving on, via Anne Thompson comes the news that Fox Searchlight has finally figured a safe venue to have recovering star Owen Wilson promote The Darjeeling Limited.
Wilson will be interviewed by Darjeeling director, friend and frequent collaborator Wes Anderson, with the interview then appearing on MySpace as part of their Artist on Artist series. That means Wilson is more or less guaranteed a non-hostile line of questioning, something I think we can all agree is a good thing considering no one knows how exactly he’s doing.
But check out Thompson’s last line:
“In other words, Searchlight is using the Internet to go direct to fans.”
I could give this woman a big hug.
Studios: Forget all the old business models. Forget filters and gate-keepers and everything else about how the publicity business used to work.
Create content. Just go for it. The internet means you have the platform to distribute almost unlimited amounts of content at an extremely low cost. So go for it. Throw it all online and see what sticks. The quality will undoubtedly improve as you do it, take my word for it.
Is every blog post, video interview or audio file going to be a hit, sparking a huge numbers of posts celebrating its brilliance? No. But you might be spiking the items that will because you’re not willing to just go fro broke, opting not to say too much.
I mean, if I and some of my blog brethren can put up five to 10 posts a day, what can a huge studio like Warner Bros. (just to pick the first one that came to mind) put out?
The Fox Searchlight blog puts up at least a handful of posts a week, and a good amount of them are ones that I at least take the time to read in full even if I don’t link to them. Those posts give me a really cool look at the studio and has created a much stronger connection me and it, at least on my end. Heck, the relationship goes both ways, with them highlighting some of the Searchlight posts I’d put up in a post of their own a while ago.
Go talk to your customers. You’d be surprised at the benefits, even if they don’t have an immediate impact on financial numbers.
