Southland Tales poster

Southland Tales poster

I’m going to respectfully disagree with /Film on this new poster for Richard Kelly’s oft-delayed ensemble film Southland Tales. I’m on record fairly often as not liking the multi-strip design employed on way too many movie posters but this one works. That’s because it does more than just use the format as a way to throw as many floating heads up as possible. It gives us a peak at the world of the film with the background images, as well as the looks on the character’s faces, which go beyond “somber,” which is the emotion most often employed with these sorts of one-sheets.

I also really love the fact that there’s a poster within the poster here. It creates a nice sort of interruption of the image (as well as presenting what’s essentially an upside down/reversed American flag) that catches the eye and adds just a little more depth to the poster. It’s kind of fantastic. [via CINE]

Seriously, this may be one of the worst posters I’ve seen this year. The actors faces don’t convey anything except for a fearful stupor, and the poster within a poster not only shrinks your tagline and title to something not easily readable, the dark color stops your eye. You end up scanning down to the actress’ face and right off the page. None of the actors eyes lead me to the title, so I’m unlikely to ever catch it, instead skimming straight down the stripes and missing it entirely. The most important words in the poster to me are “Eliot Frost ‘08″ That’s what you want your audience to walk away with?
