Quick Takes 8/31/07: Trailer Round-Up

I’m not sure if this trailer for Trade, about the international sex slave trade starring Kevin Kline, is new or if it’s the same one I watched a while ago, but it’s great and deserving of a look either for the first time or again.

The trailer for Great World of Sound is quite funny as [...]

Quick Takes 8/30/07

The fall movie season is well stocked with familiar faces even if the movies themselves are a little more hardcore and in some cases obscure. That makes it easy for marketers and if you look at some of the movies on the list you’ll remember the posters almost universally feature the actors in question.
Somehow this [...]

The Heartbreak Kid official website

Dreamworks has launched the official site for the Farrelly Bros.-directed, Ben Stiller-starring comedy The Heartbreak Kid. The site is pretty bare-bones right now but Kirk at Real Pie says more updates will be coming soon, including a bunch of interactive features.

Saw IV poster

I think I speak for everyone when I say, “WTF?” [via Alex]

Sisters posters

For the record, I agree with everything Gus has to say about these posters for Sisters.

Run, Fatboy, Run poster

What do you do if you have a movie with a funny plot but one that takes way to long to explain to people and is tough to sum up in just a single image?
You create a poster that makes the (admittedly funny in its own right) title the focal point of the movie’s poster, [...]

Lionsgate advertises War on Next New programming

Tucked into this Wall Street Journal story on how advertisers are exploring the opportunities afforded by niche video programming is the fact that one of those advertisers is Lionsgate on behalf of their new movie War. The studio is the first major sponsor signed by Next New Networks, which acts as an umbrella site for [...]

Grace is Gone trailer

While I might have had issues with the poster, this trailer for the John Cusack-starring Grace is Gone is one of the best I’ve seen in quite a while. It’s moving, it’s funny and it showcases what might be one of Cusack’s best performances in recent years if the footage in this spot is any [...]

Mini Book Review: Marketing to Moviegoers

I’m way behind in writing reviews of two books I’ve read recently so I’ll start to try and right that wrong now.
Marketing to Moviegoers by Robert Marich is a must read if you have even a passing interest in the marketing of movies. Marich covers all the major points-of-view you can approach movie marketing from, [...]

Innovative marketing pays off for movies

My latest column is up over at Brandweek. This one is just kind of a fun piece where I talk about how some of the mid-tier films of the summer were able to achieve success with marketing efforts that didn’t just included MySpace pages and massive TV ad buys. These are movies that, for the [...]

Owen Wilson and the marketing of Darjeeling Limited

There have been a number of stories written in the last few days about Owen Wilson and how the rough times he’s going through personally are affecting the movie’s that are either coming out shortly or had planned to have a role in. I was asked for my thoughts on this issue, specifically as it [...]

Slueth poster

I like this poster for Sleuth, the remake of the mystery drama that starred Michael Caine which stars, well, Michael Caine. In this version he’s the older of the pair instead of the younger, with the latter’s role now being played by Jude Law. This new version is directed by Kenneth Branagh.
It works well at [...]

Rendition poster

Seriously - Stop it with the stripes. Not every ensemble drama needs to have a poster with stripes, each one featuring a different actor from the film like this one for Rendition does. [via CINE]

New Sweeney Todd poster

I’m sorry, but no matter how many times I look at this new poster for Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd I just can’t like it. My main problem lies with the “Beware” that lies atop the sign on the one-sheet. It’s just way too on-the-nose. The marketers would be about as subtle if they created a [...]

Juno official website

Fox Searchlight has launched the official website for the Jason Reitman-directed comedy Juno. The movie is about a young girl (Ellen Page) who finds herself pregnant by her boyfriend (Michael Cera) and has to deal with that. The site not only contains the usual Searchlight web goodness like links to the IMDb pages of those [...]
