Evening poster
Focus Features has released the first poster for the female bonding/romance film Evening. I want you to exam this poster closely as it’s just about as perfect a job of summarizing the movie’s plot and major selling points as you’re likely to see.
First, there’s the cast list. It’s a veritable who’s who of the elite among the currently active actresses. The assemblage of this sort of estrogen-ensemble is going to be a huge draw for the female component of the audience. This alone has sold the movie to a certain percentage of people. Then add to that the shadowey couple smooching on the rocks to the right and you’ve sinched the attendance of others looking for a romance.
The setting of that kiss, of course, can’t be ignored. The house on the coast in back is the sort that populates fantasies of idealized life harbored (heh) by many people. And the boat going through the inlet just adds to that. So that’s helped other people commit to seeing the movie.
All that makes the tagline, “Her greatest secret was her greatest gift” almost unnecessary but it in itself provides some allure for the audience.
Finally it’s all lit as if about midway through dusk. Now it’s not even fair.
So there, the setting, the plot and the cast list all right there on the one-sheet. Like I said, just about as good a job of selling a movie with one single image as is possible. [via]
