Black Lab’s Transformers theme song
Via CC Chapman:
Have you heard the utter crap version of the theme song that is going out with the Transformers movie? If not then don’t bother.
The guys in Black Lab heard it and thought it sucked as well. But, in true new media fashion they didn’t just sit around and complain about it. They went into the studio and recorded their own version. On top of that they took all the footage out there from the trailers and cut together a music video for it as well.
Here’s the vid:

I completely with CC that this is a shining example of fans not being content with someone’s official marketing and doing it themselves – sometimes even better. I’m lately of the opinion that it’s kind of okay if studios – or any other company – doesn’t fully embrace the people who are writing about it since there’s often no real end goal to people who are doing this kind of thing. It is important to identify key influencers and at least reach out to them but the volume of this sort of stuff is too much for any corporation to reasonably manage. It is important, though, that corporations not get in the way of these fan-made marketing efforts. Doing so is self-defeating and more often than not results in the company getting a reputation black eye AS WELL AS no further word-of-mouth support.
But these are all issues that are still being discussed and debated. The important thing is that this song rocks and shows how easy these sorts of media tools are to use.

I agree with your note about studios letting it roll. But what might egg them on in this instance is Black Lab trying to make a completely justified buck off their sweet tune. Props to Lab on the tune and the way they serve it up, but it might make a movie studio think less “passionate customer evangelist” and more “fly trying to make money by riding on my back.” Does that make any sense?

[...] In a move that will probably peeve Michael Bay to no end (I mean, let’s “transcend toy roots” of the Transformers already), Black Lab has recorded its own version of the “Transformers” theme song, since they, among others, didn’t care for the Mute Math version that is floating around in snippets and will be released on the film’s album. Thilk spells it out, mentioning how this is “a shining example of fans not being content with someone’s official marketing and doing it themselves.” [...]
