MPAA hits AfterDark with huge sanctions in response to Captivity SNAFU

Following the controversy surrounding the outdoor ads for Captivity that included what some felt were inappropriate scenes of torture and such, the MPAA has hit AfterDark, the studio producing the film, with a number of sanctions and penalties.
…the MPAA has suspended the ratings process for “Captivity” and is requiring the horror specialist to clear with [...]

Wristcutters poster

Ummm…OK. I’m not sure that this poster for Wristcutters: A Love Story has any real point to it. It doesn’t sell the movie at all, it doesn’t really hint at the dark comedy the flick is supposed to be. If you know the movie’s plot it makes sense, since the setting is some sort of [...]

Evan Almighty trailer and website

Here’s the trailer for Evan Almighty that debuted during last Thursday’s “The Office” marathon on NBC. It’s OK. Steve Carell is funny and he gets hit in the groin a couple of times and has some other great reaction shots.
I do, however, have some substantive and theological problems with the movie’s premise.
1) Why does Carell’s [...]

New Surf’s Up trailer

I have to say, after watching the new trailer for Surf’s Up, that Sony was wise to schedule it for when it did. When the first trailer was released it was in the middle of the Happy Feet publicity onslaught and Surf wound up looking like “the other” penguin movie.
Now that Happy Feet has passed [...]

New Ocean’s 13 trailer

I don’t know. I don’t think this new trailer for Ocean’s 13 is as good as the first. It’s missing a rythem the first one had. I’m not saying it’s bad. On the contrary it looks like just as much fun as the first two installments. But the trailer just isn’t working for me. It [...]

Martian Child trailer

In Martian Child, John Cusack plays a science fiction writer who comes across a young boy without parents who lives in a cardboard box and you can check out the movie’s trailer here. He does so because he believes he’s from Mars. Cusack is drawn to the child and eventually petitions to become his guardian, [...]

Severance trailer

It’s unclear based on the trailer whether Severance is a black horror comedy or straight horror. There are a few funny moments but those are then followed by some very dark scenes of either explicit or implied mutilation/torture. See if you can figure it out but I can’t. What I do know is that the [...]

Operation Homecoming trailer

One part documentary, one part dramatization, Operation Homecoming tells the story of U.S. military veterans and their experiences in Iraq. I won’t go into the politics (sorry MyAdWon) but will say the trailer is very cool and worth checking out. Despite the shift back and forth it’s easy to follow and intriguing.

Bourne Ultimatum International trailer

Alex has the first full trailer to hit for The Bourne Ultimatum, the third installment of the Jason Bourne franchise starring Matt Damon. It’s incredibly effective at establishing desire to see the movie, largely because it spends so much time invoking the memory of the first two movies.
The first third of the trailer’s running time [...]

Redline trailer

How does a movie like Redline get made? And how bad is this trailer. Every time you think you’re going to settle into the main plot of the movie a new (and even more boring) wrinkle is pulled out. It all adds up to a trailer that had me thinking “Aren’t there like three movies [...]

Hawk is Dying trailer

Paul Giamatti takes on the role of a man obsessed with training a hawk he finds in Hawk is Dying. You can watch the trailer here. It’s pretty good and very much focuses on Giamatti - not a surprise considering the level of “indie fame” he has. The trailer moves along nicely and presents what [...]

Marvel movie updates

Both Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer have a number of updates to report on here.
Spider-Man 3
FilmRotation points to another new international trailer. This one features a little bit more of a look at Venom in ass-kicking mode but mostly uses the same footage that’s been included in everyone one of [...]

Movie Marketing Madness: Blades of Glory

There’s no one, I don’t think, in American comedy today with a funnier body than Will Ferrell. And he shows it off whenever he can. Whether streaking in Old School or doing a cannonball with Scotch in hand in Anchorman, Ferrell takes any opportunity to show his puffy, disproportionate torso on camera. It’s part of [...]
