The Good German will be hard to promote
Sheigh Crabtree at the Risky Biz Blog has a post up that hints at the problems Steven Soderbergh’s new movie The Good German may face in reaching a mass audience. Aside from being shot in black-and-white, the movie, about the race to get German scientists out of post-WWII Germany, is reported to be a “downer” [...]
Book Review: Citizen Marketers
Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba provide plenty of examples of how people like you and me are changing the face of marketing in their new book “Citizen Marketers: When People are the Message.†The book is cram-packed with stories of people who have created their own ads for a company simply on account of being [...]
The Fountain poster giveaway
My pals over at FirstShowing have a contest giving away copies of the poster for The Fountain. Go on over and try your luck.
The contest also inspires quite a post from Kevin Kelly at Cinematical on how the marketing efforts of small, niche movies like this are often over-powered by those for more lowbrow movies [...]
Making it worth the audience’s time
A trio of recent stories have all hit my radar and all combine to make a universal point.
The first is this story from The Seattle Times. It asks a relatively simple question that I can honestly say had never occurred to me before: Why do all movies cost the same? That’s a fantastic question. Almost [...]
Black Christmas trailer
Lots of stupid girls do lots of stupid horror-movie things in this trailer for Black Christmas. They go off on their own, decide that this is the perfect time to take a shower and explore the creepy attic and more.
New Arthur and the Invisibles poster
I swear, if ever a poster looked like it were designed by a committee it’s this new one for Arthur and the Invisibles. It’s not that there’s anything really wrong with it, it’s fine. But it just contains everything that a board room full of marketing guys would think needs to be on a movie [...]
Letters from Iwo Jima posters
JoBlo has collected all six new character posters from Clint Eastwood’s Letter From Iwo Jima on one page for convenient viewing. These are all extremely moving and definitely show a human side to the Japanese involvement in the Battle of Iwo Jima. This is the companion piece to the previous Flags of Our Fathers which [...]
When WB said “tags” I thought they meant something else
So a couple weeks ago I see a news item about how Lex Luthor “tags” were appearing all over the internet, an obvious promotion for the Superman Returns DVD that’s coming out this Tuesday. Being a New Media geek I saw “tags” and thought Technorati tags. Not seeing any of these anywhere I go off [...]
Quick Takes: 11/27/06
Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving if you’re here in the U.S. Some quick links to start your week off right. Back to regular posting after the week starts anew.
The MIT Adverlab talks about the Italian Job theme park ride at King’s Island.
The teaser trailer for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer will [...]
The Hills Have Eyes 2 poster
Well, if there’s one good thing to say about this poster for The Hills Have Eyes 2, it’s that it retains the same sort of visual elements as the first one. It’s actually not that bad, especially if you’re a fan of movies like this. It’s likely to make you say, “Oooo, wonder what that’s [...]
Two new Spider-Man 3 posters
Sony has released two new posters for Spider-Man 3 that both play up the “battle within” theme the movie will take. I really like the black-costume/red and blue costume version but don’t get the point of the blue&red/gold version. Where the one that just shows the two normal costumes is quite striking and, more to [...]
The Number 23 poster
I really like the way this poster for The Number 23 takes Jim Carrey’s face and uses it to completely creep out the viewer. It’s normally used for such silly and harmless purposes that to see such a contrast makes the poster quite striking.
Miss Potter trailer
Yep, my initial impression of Miss Potter has been confirmed by the just-released trailer. They’re creating a female version of Finding Neverland. It looks like most of the cast does their best with what seems to be ham-fisted material but Renee Zelwegger just weighs the entire thing down. Feh.

Wild Hogs trailer
Maybe it’s just the anticipation of a long weekend talking but this trailer for Wild Hogs, a road comedy starring William H. Macy, John Travolta, Tim Allen and Martin Lawrence looks funny. I don’t want to find it funny but it made me laugh more than once. It’s strictly mainstream stuff, meant to show how [...]
Invincible Iron Man trailer
No, this isn’t for the Robert Downey Jr.-starring big screen adventure, but for the direct-to-DVD “Invincible Iron Man” animated film coming out early next year. Still, the trailer makes the movie look pretty good. That’s despite the biggest disappointment, which is the lack of dialogue. There are lots of action shots and scenes of people [...]
