More spiked ads, this time for Shut Up and Sing

Another politically themed movie, another controversy over media outlets refusing to run ads. This time it’s Shut Up and Sing, the Dixie Chicks documentary regarding the problems they encountered after they began openly criticizing Dear Leader President Bush. It’s being reported that both The CW and NBC have rejected the ads, with the Weinstein Co. issuing a release that says NBC turned them down because they included material that “disparages President Bush.” The CW says that they did not, in fact, reject the ads but that discussions with the studio never got to the point that the ads were actually being planned.

Thank Heaven for the internet, though, because you can watch the ad here on the Shut Up and Post website (which I should have guessed was a brainchild of the bright folks at Deep Focus. I must have been under-caffinated to not put “Weinstein movie” and “brilliant online execution” together to come up with DF). You can also check out an online ad for the movie, as well as the SU&P site here.

And take a moment to bask in the irony of a movie about free speech being silenced by the big media establishment.

I get the irony, but I also think it’s ironic that a movie about the Dixie Chicks could end up doing better than their music does.
