2006 August : Movie Marketing Madness

Good question

I’ve had this saved for a while simply because I didn’t know quite what to do with it. John asks if marketing is killing good stories in Hollywood. Thoughts?

Marketing at movie theaters

Marketing blogger John Cass is pondering the “lost sales opportunities” from not having DVDs available for purchas as you leave the theater. Let me give John’s sentiments a hearty “Amen!”
The thing about it is that it doesn’t just have to be DVDs, though that’s certainly a large pile of money that’s being left on the [...]

Black Dahlia newsreel

The other day I pointed out a newspaper insert Universal was using to promote The Black Dahlia. Well the retro-advertising keeps coming, this time in the form of a newsreel-esque video containing archival footage from the early part of this century, including that of the murder of Betty Short, who came to be known as [...]

49 Up trailer

The latest installment in a series of documentaries from director Michael Apted, 49 Up takes a look at the life of a group of people who have been filmed every seven years since the age of seven. That initial film was called 7 Up and has been updated five times between then and now. The [...]

Feast trailer

While others seem to think that the trailer for Feast show just how funny and outrageous the movie will be, I’m going to disagree. The lines the actors are speaking are funny, but the way the trailer is arranged and patched together plays it deadly seriously. That actually makes the funny parts - and some [...]

What do you like on the web?

So this afternoon I began - and pretty much finished, thanks to a 45 minute train delay - a piece for iMediaConnection that details what I like about movie websites and gives what I feel are some concrete points to consider for improving what I don’t like. It’s not a rant but is, I think, [...]

The Invisible poster

I don’t particularly care for the poster for The Invisible. I get what they were going for but it reminds me too much of the scene from Daredevil where Ben Affleck is able to “see” Jennifer Garner when the rain falls on her.

I find your lack of content disturbing

Jeff Wells is disappointed by the lack of a website for the upcoming Miramax release Venus. I’d like to echo that and express my own disappointment that I can’t find a trailer for Flannel Pajamas. It looks like it could be a great movie and I was planning on writing a full column on it [...]

Revenge of the Nerds poster

Check out the poster for the Fox remake of Revenge of the Nerds. It’s funny, yeah, but I think it leans more toward disturbing. I like the way the title is put within the image on the tape that’s holding the glasses together.

The Departed is the sole advertiser on CBS show

Warner Bros. has bought the privilege to be the sole advertiser during the series premiere of “Smith” on CBS as a promotional platform for The Departed. That means only four minutes - two two-minute blocks - of advertising will be embedded within the show. Those two-minute blocks will be used by WB to provide some [...]

Fandango’s fancy new ads

The PointRoll-powered ads now populating online movie ticket service Fandango are every bit as much about the marketing of movies as they are about making ticket purchasing easier. Here’s why, straight from Dan Mohler of Fandango:

Mohler: It’s all about the consumer and making it easier for film fans to get access to the movies they [...]

The Bridge trailer

The Bridge is a documentary about the shocking amount of people who decide to end their lives by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. You can watch the trailer here. It does a very good job of setting up a very eery presence for the bridge, which itself is the main character in the film.

Mutual Appreciation trailer

I really like director Andrew Bujalski’s Funny Ha-ha. I thought it was fresh and original and didn’t try to gloss over the difficulties of being a young person who hasn’t quite figured out where they belong in the world. So I’m very excited by the trailer for his next film, Mutual Appreciation. It looks like [...]
