Making theater going exciting
Alex at a FirstShowing dropped me a line regarding this post he’d put up on his blog about making theater going exciting again. This is the best quote from that post regarding how it ties into the marketing of the movie:
Our increase in experience dwells rather largely on the fact that you may want to actually get a free copy of the movie poster for the movie you just saw, or answer some trivia for the movie you are about to see. Yes, it is necessary for those additional movie theatre amenities to be present for an enjoyable time, but actually building the connection between Hollywood and the movie goer in the theatre is what will make the experience that much greater.
Theater going right now is one of the few - if not only - entertainment experiences where you don’t have the opportunity to buy or otherwise get related swag as part of that experience. At the legitimate theater you can buy the soundtrack, a magnet or other branded products. At museums most of the major exhibits force you to exit through a gift shop. And theme parks have stuff for sale all over the place. But movies? You can keep your ticket stub! I think Alex is really onto something when he talks about adding branded products as part of the theater going experience.
Back when I worked at a theater we had a deal with the local record shop where you could come into the store with your ticket stub and get a discount on the movie’s soundtrack. It wasn’t much but at least it was something that extended the visitor’s interaction with the movie. I’d love to see a studio or theater chain decide to give people the opportunity to express their passion for the movie in some sort of innovative way.
