2006 March : Movie Marketing Madness

Busy couple of weeks

Work - my actual job - has been kicking my ass the last couple weeks. That’s why there haven’t been any new columns up. If I had a bit more time I likely would have at least covered all or some of the following: Basic Instinct 2, Inside Man, Brick, Lonesome Jim and [...]

Mack’s new blog

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Mack Collier, one of the writers on Beyond Madison Avenue, has a new blog of his very own. The Viral Garden is an opportunity for Mack to express himself as often as he needs to and on any subject he feels like without hogging space on [...]

Simpsons teaser trailer

I really don’t think this is an April Fools gag since JoBlo takes pains to say it’s not so consider this valid speculation at least. People are saying that a teaser trailer for the long-rumored and much-anticipated full-length movie version of “The Simpsons” is being attached to some prints of Ice Age 2. That’s not [...]

The genius of Snakes on a Plane

Both Jon Fine at BusinessWeek and Richard Williamson at adfreak have written great pieces on the advertising and marketing of Snakes on a Plane. Both come to roughly the same conclusion, that the movie will likely be a disaster but what a show that’s going on before it comes out.
Someone commented on a recent [...]

Universal Pictures has announced the winner of their “Slug it out” contest for their upcoming horror comedy Slither. A commercial created by Chris Ell was aired during “My Name Is Earl” this evening.

Spider-Man 3 wallpaper

Sony has made the teaser image for Spider-Man 3 they released a while ago available as a desktop wallpaper you can download. It’s about time for Sony to re-start that blog so we can all know about these things.

Movie marketing quiz

Far from the funny quizzes that test your memory of taglines and other things, this quiz asks you to match up the ridiclous quote to the movie executive who uttered it. These are actual quotes. This is the kind of thing Dilbert was invented to rail against.

When Do We Eat poster, trailer links and microsite

THINKFilm has provided me with links to the trailer for When Do We Eat?, a new comedy about a Jewish family trying to get through a seder in one peice. They’ve also created this microsite featuring a hip-hop dancing Moses which I’m sure violates many, many commandments. The poster on the left is pretty cool [...]

Cutting Edge 2 trailer

I honestly don’t know which is more disturbing, the fact that based on the trailer Cutting Edge 2: Going for the Gold looks almost exactly like the first movie or the fact that it’s been long enough since that first movie that the lead characters would have a grown daughter. I mean that [...]

Extended scene from The Wild

Disney has released an extended scene from their upcoming animated flick The Wild on Apple’s Quicktime site that you can view here. The clip is available in either normal streaming or downloadable versions for your iPod.

Sunshine official website and new blog

Fox Searchlight, via Real Pie Media, has launched the official website for the movie Sunshine that has a new blog integrated within it. The blog is being written by a production assistant on the film and has been updated since August so there’s plenty of content to sift through for new visitors. Very nice effort [...]

Basic Instinct 2 on Netflix envelopes

Netflix has sold the space inside its envelopes to the marketing team at Sony to promote Basic Instinct 2. HackingNetflix has the scan of Sharon Stone with her legs closed for a freakin’ change.

Trailer Round-up for 3/28/06

Things are a little crazy here at MMM headquarters, which of course coincides with a whole mess of new trailers. In order to clear out the queue I thought I’d offer this round-up instead of a whole bunch of separate posts.

The promotional reel Warner Bros. created to promote Poseidon at ShoWest is now online.

The [...]

Stop the presses!

If you’re interested in even more of my take on movie marketing you can check out an article I wrote for iMediaConnection’s new Entertainment Spot section. It’s titled “Making Your Movie a Brand Experience” and is the first of several I’m planning on writing for iMedia.

“Wife Force One”

First off, let me just state I’m breaking a rule of mine by even posting about this. I had kind of decided to stop talking about these trailer remixes since they all seemed to be doing the same thing and were doing it increasingly poorly.
Anyway…
A while ago at adfreak Tim Nudd put up a [...]
