Serenity Trailer

This just rocks.
The trailer for Joss Whedon’s Serenity has finally been released and lives up to just about all my expectations. There’s action, there’s humor and not a hint of contrived romance. I swear, if the movie is half as exciting as the trailer then this could be the best movie of the year.
For fans of the TV show we get dialogue that sounds so very familiar. (My favorite is Wash’s marttini-dry “Oh my God, Oh my God, we’re going to die” line.) We also get glimpses of the entire ensemble, with the focus of course being on Mal Reynolds and the mysterious River. Speaking of which, it looks like we get more of River instinctivly kicking ass, the way she did in War Stories. Plus, there’s a wicked cool shot of a Reaver.
For newcomers the trailer is presented free of backstory and looks basically like just another sci-fi action flick, albeit one that is probably ten times smarter than Resident Evil 2 or Alien Vs. Predator. (That’s not hard, though. Most one year olds would have their intelligence insulted by those two.) The basic plot is set up of a crew running from the law and guarding a fugitive while a bounty hunter comes after them.
I love how they managed to mesh the two goals here, appealing both to the broad audience as well as the fan base. My one concern about the movie: Do we hear the spaceships engine’s in space? The lack of engine noise was one of the things that set the TV show apart from just about everything else. There’s no noise in the vacumn of space, after all. It’s a minor quibble but I’d hate to see that particular conceit jettisoned.
The trailer is highly recommended.
